We can all find uplift in the images of the smiling faces of those sturdy Vermont folks who have and are still weathering the destruction of Hurricane Irene. My family and I lived in Vermont for 14 years where we owned a vegan organic Bed and Breakfast. A portion of our hearts will always remain in that pristine land within the memories we carry inside of us.
Vermont people are no strangers to the adversity of weather conditions that require sleepless nights behind snow plows on a regular basis. However when the water is not in it's frozen form of snow the challenge goes beyond what even they have skills to manage and yet they get to work with a kind of community spirit that warms the heart to witness.
Rugged individualism gives way to cooperation as restaurants opened their kitchens to receive whatever food was being donated for cooking. They freely offered meals to those in their towns who gathered to share food and stories of encouragement.
They will work for many months to repair the damage to their homes and cities. And yet the incredible beauty of this northern state shines through in the videos seen on U tube, taken by citizens throughout the country side. Amazingly the smiles on the faces of folks, standing outside with their belongings strewn around them on porches and in yards drying in the sun, bring a strong sense of the spirit of gratitude that they are still alive and determined to return to the life they treasure.
Nature is calling us all to a higher ground where appreciation and gratitude become our dominate thought patterns as we focus our minds toward emotional upliftment. By cultivating the habit of Smiling Endlessly in gratitude we can stabilize our lives in times of adversity and challenge.
